My grandfather passed when I was about 13 and lived back east, so I was pretty limited on time for his stories growing up. I do recall that he and a few other guys went to Europe to "kick Hitler's ass" lol
I did a WWII report about him in Junior High, and was fortunate to get his responses to a lot of things going on at that time. One that sticks with me was to the question, "Where were you when Pearl Harbor was attacked?". He was having brunch in South Carolina with his wife (my Nona), and he was "happy, happy, happy" because he had just been discharged from the Army and was supposed to be going home. Not sure who he was with when he served prior to the war, but he was quickly re-enlisted and placed in the 88th.
My great uncle on my grandmother's side was with the 10th Mountain Division and I did get to spend time with him as an adult just as he was willing to talk about his activities/experiences during the war driving the General around, and he said once that he thought my Grandfather might have been a nurse or medic. I would have thought nurses would have been attached as their own group, but I do have his medals from the 88th for service in Africa and Europe.
Also, he was a semi-pro boxer and I think the boxing started when he was in the Army at some point. Not sure if that narrows anything down but hopeful if anyone might have old pictures of their relatives with others who may have been nurses or boxers.
Any info would be helpful, trying to preserve some family history as I seem to be the last alive that has most of the strings to my family's past.
Thanks!
