Hi,
I'd appreciate any information on the 913th. My Dad was Staff Sergeant Joe O. Todd from Henderson Texas. I have my Dad's military papers, as well as his dictated "memories". Daddy was assigned to an advance team several times, so he moved around as a part of several Infantry Divisions in Italy, in addition to the 88th.
Selected as Most Outstanding Enlisted Man from the 913th Field Artillery Battalion:
"....Because of this dependability and efficiency, he was included in the advance party that preceded the Division into combat seeing action as a member of forward observation parties with the 13th Division at Cassino and the 45th Division at Vemafre. He was a member of the first artillery forward observation party of this Division on its initial entry into action, at Cassino. From this time until the enemy was defeated in Italy, he saw more action with frontline troops as a member of forward observation parties than any other individual assigned to the Battalion. Through all this action has courage and leadership was a steadying influence on all with whom he associated. This soldier was decorated for heroic achievement in action on two occasions for which he received a Bronze Star Medal and an Oak Leaf Cluster to the Bronze Star Medal. During this time, he was promoted to Reconnaissance Sergeant, and subsequently appointed Staff Sergeant in the capacity of Chief of Detail. Because of the outstanding courage, initiative, resourcefulness, and steadiness of Sergeant Todd, he was always designated to accompany new officers as a seasoned assistant on their initial assignments as combat forward observers despite the fact, it was no longer his job. Under his outstanding leadership as Chief of Detail, his section was unexcelled I speed and accuracy in preparing its firing charts and approached perfection in the rapid conversion of firing data to deliver instant and effective fire...."
Thanks in advance for your help,
Bobbie Ann
