Hello,
I am trying to find out more about my Grandfather’s service during WWII.
My Grandfather (John C. Steenlage, Jr. - 37685068, Garner, Iowa) was drafted in Iowa on or about February 19, 1944. His date of birth is February 18, 1918. After basic training, my Grandfather was assigned to the 88th Infantry Division (Blue Devils) and shipped to Camp Fannin. In the early summer of 1944 Grandpa received orders to Italy, and according to the Western Union telegram my grandmother received. on October 21, 1944 he received a shrapnel wound to his left arm while fighting in Italy. It is my understanding that he was in the 349 Infantry Regiment when he was wounded.
I believe that at some later point (for unknown reasons), my Grandfather was transferred to the 527th and/or 60th Air Service Squadrons. I also believe that Grandpa was Honorably Discharged on January 17, 1946 as a Private.
I have tried to get additional information about my Grandfather’s military service from the National Personnel Records Center, but was informed that due to a fire in 1973 there was no additional information available. In spite of this, I am hoping to learn anything more about my Grandfather’s military service than what is outlined above (which is about all I know).
My Grandfather passed away in the early 1970’s when I was just a child, so I wasn’t able to ask him about his service. Therefore, any additional information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks! Keith ksteenlage@yahoo.com
